Electrical Competency Course

Course overview:

All Electrical workers must attend a competency course every two years to maintain their practicing licence.

To complete this course each participant must:

  • Complete an E-learning course*

  • Pass a written assessment

  • Pass a practical assessment

  • Complete a basic first aid course

*The participant must complete the e-learning course and print off a copy of the certificate or have a copy of an existing or previous certificate before they can attend the course.

Basic First Aid is delivered and assessed as part of the course

On satisfactory completion of the course, the participant’s completion will be recorded on the EWRB database.

We are able to offer competency courses for the following classes of registration:

  • Electrical Inspector

  • Electrician

  • Electrical Engineer

  • Electrical Installer

  • Associated Trades Persons

  • Electrical Service Technicians

  • Electrical Appliance Service Person

  • Electrical Appliance Service Person Endorsed

Course Details:

Duration

The course is approximately 6 hours.

The time taken is determined by several factors including:

  • The classes of registration on the course

  • The number of participants

  • The experience and knowledge of the participants

Time

General courses will begin at 9:00 AM and finish at 3:00 PM with a half-hour break for lunch.

Cost

$173.00 +GST for the general courses

Facilitator

Ross Dixon will be the principal facilitator; he has been involved in facilitating competency courses all over the country since their inception and has a very broad knowledge of the wider Electrical Industry.

In accordance with the EWRB Facilitators guide (pg. 6)

If a participant fails to satisfactorily complete either the written or practical assessments on the course, they may be given an opportunity to resit those parts that they have failed during course time, or if they have failed by a large margin, the board will be notified and they will be offered additional training as agreed between the participant and the facilitator. (note this will be at an additional cost to the participant).

The EWRB are making a concentrated drive to ensure consistency of competency courses and to that end are carrying out an on-site audit of all competency course providers to ensure their compliance with the EWRB prescription. We will be doing all we can to ensure the integrity of the courses.

Private training and assessment

Courses can also be run for specific groups such as:

  • Individual companies

  • Plumber/gasfitters

These courses will be at times and sites as agreed.

The cost for a specific course will be at an agreed price.
